Gallery Izabel Pinheiro Presents “From the Earth to the Source” Solo Exhibition by Gabriela Noujaim
The exhibition "From the Earth to the Source" by Gabriela Noujaim, curated by Ana Carla Soler, will be on display at Galeria Izabel Pinheiro starting April 13, 2024. This show is the result of Noujaim's artistic residency in the interior of Portugal, where she explored villages and interviewed individuals who, in colonizing lands, carry the heritage of ancestral feminine knowledge. Since 2016, the artist has actively participated in sacred feminine gatherings, sharing exchanges and learning with the indigenous people of Aldeia Maracanã and the Guajajara ethnicity, nurturing the fundamental relationship between humans, nature, and animals. Gabriela, therefore, takes the reverse route of the Portuguese invasion during the maritime expansion project, equipped with the intellectual knowledge of Brazilian indigenous wisdom. She crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a confrontation that culminated in this exhibition.
The title of the exhibition, "From the Earth to the Source," shares its name with a book-work created by Noujaim, where she denounces the excessive exploitation of the earth. The work includes photographs and texts from her experience in Portugal, which remain invisible to the naked eye but become fluorescent under light. The exhibition comprises 17 works, including engravings, photographs, installations, audio, sculpture, and video, offering an interactive experience that provides visitors with immersive sensory and emotional experiences with the artist's works.
The diversity of mediums used demonstrates that the message the artist seeks to convey transcends the chosen language and brings forth elements of nature, the scars of deforestation, and humanity's relentless exploitation of natural resources, which reflect the essence of the artist's body of work.
